The first three projects in this class have provided a good overview of adult education. In the first assignment we had the opportunity to individually research a decade of our choice to understand what the influential factors were, and the implications as well as some highlights for the decade.
Members of our group researched the 1930’s where, higher education was expanding rapidly, even during the Great Depression. There was widespread dissatisfaction with current educational methods. The trend in both government and education was toward socialism and the prominent philosophical bent was becoming humanistic. Many conservatives sought modes of education other than public. John Dewey’s Progressive Education, based on humanistic and atheistic philosophy, revolutionized education in the U.S
The 1960’s was a time of social change, with many legislative bills being passed including: Higher Education Facilities Act of 1963, Civil Rights Act of 1964, Higher Education Act of 1965, The Manpower Training and Development Act (MTDA), the Area Redevelopment Act (ARA), and The Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. There were several events influential people that made an impact on adult education and social change including: President John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, John F. Kennedy’s assassination, Assassination of Martin Luther King, the Civil rights movement, and the Vietnam war.
The 1980’s saw an increase in unemployment and cost of living. Rising cost of living and increased unemployment rate in the early 80’s lead to interest in CTE, literacy, and strengthening of the national economy. The Perkins Act of 1984 brought funding and attention to vocational education. In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web which may have been one of the biggest implications for adult education with on-line education.
Our second project was a group project on Adult and Community Educators in Formal Education. In this project we researched two influential adult educators of our choice, We choose John Dewey and Malcom Knowles. John Dewey’s “Progressive Education” promoted the development of the individual’s intellectual, moral, and aesthetic capabilities through experiential learning within social contexts rather than through the impartation of a succession of core curriculum and discipline from an authority figure (Dupuis, 1966; Gangel & Benson, 1983). The elements of experiential learning included: non-competitive and respectful social interaction among the teacher and learners, motivation through interest, and the instructor as facilitator of learning (Dupuis, 1966). Critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, experimentation, hands-on activities, and experiences in nature were all integral components of Dewey’s educational model (Mayer, 1960). Additionally, learning experiences which build positively on previous knowledge, with implications of future experiences would be likewise productive (Gangel & Benson, 1983).
Knowles is sometimes referred to as the father of adult education. Knowles believed the focus on adult education was informal. He saw a distinction between formal education and informal education. Knowles wrote several books and developed the concept of andragogy, which translates into teaching adults. Additionally, Knowles formulated guidelines for developing a competency-based graduate program for training adult educators and human resources developers (Sopher, 2003). These guidelines were intended to help with a new graduate program in adult education. Competency based education has increased in popularity in the last couple of decades.
Our third project was to research two educational institutions and highlight their programs, similarities, and differences. For this project we selected Western Governors University (WGU) and The University of Twente (UoT) in the Netherlands. WGU’s mission is to improve quality and expand access to postsecondary educational opportunities by providing a means for individuals to learn independent of time or place and to earn competency-based degrees and other credentials that are credible to both academic institutions and employers. It focuses on competency-based education (CBE) which allows for a transition away from seat time and credit hours in favor of demonstration of mastery in academic content, regardless of place, time, or pace of learning.
UoT’s mission is to create programs and curriculum responsive to the needs of society and, at the same time, develop a broad knowledge potential. UoT employs the Twente Education Model, (TOM) model into four major programs and utilizes thematic learning modules to present content in methods that are cohesive and build upon progressive relation of content.

Great information. I think that communication is the biggest hurdle for all the groups. It is a hard concept to work together, especially at a distance. Thank you for for sharing your survival tips, they were helpful.
ReplyDeleteHi Group 4,
ReplyDeleteI really like the fact that your group had two different speakers for the Survival Memo assignment. I found that the perspectives and information given by both of you hit on different areas that are very important for a good experience in this class. Additionally, I like the way you summarized the project you worked on. I feel that if I read this summary I would be inclined to want to know more about your findings and as such would click on the other pages to see more in-depth about your work.
Great job!

David, Nic, Linda, Jillian, Wayne and Rose,
ReplyDeleteI really like your survival memo and the video introduction of your project! I know you have experienced some technical difficulties. But I am so glad that you have created a new video and introduced your project very nicely! I also like the concrete ideas provided in your Prezi!
By the way, your blog is very clean and well organized! I know that it is difficult to communicate with each other in a larger group, but I am impressed that some of your assignments are excellent! I am proud of you for achieving so much during this semester!
Suggestions:
In Prezi, you may use some pictures, videos or other multi-media formats to make the presentation more creative. For example, when you introduce the organizations and programs, you can add some pictures relevant to these organizations; you may also add the videos and the screenshot of the website of the organizations so that your readers can visually see what these organizations look like.
